A view of the land from the sea

A week on a boat sailing around the islands off the west coast of Scotland inspired a series of seascapes in collage and print techniques. This series was exhibited at Open Art Exhibition during the Aberdour Festival in Fife in July 2008.

Women in private, May 2008

There are a series of women from this exhibition who are mostly scantily clan, blushing and in corners of their living rooms/ kitchens/ bedrooms? Sometimes they remind me of the intimate domestic and mostly cringey images from You Tube where people are singing to the mirror, checking themselves out in the mirror or fantasising about who they might be with. There is a level of dissatisfaction and resignation.

Plugs and sockets, April 2008

These electrical components seem so cold and blank - a perfect metaphor for disfunctional relations and difficult sexual interactions . Not that I am making any specific comment about Leith, just contemporary loneliness. (honest)

Images of Morocco, Saraswati exhibition July 2007

A month of travelling, sketching, sweating and giggling through northern and central Morocco led to a series of drawings and paintings which were exhibited at the Sarawati Fair Trade Shop in July 2007. We seemed to be surrounded on all sides with amazing landscape and architecture - different cities and towns are dominated by specific colours, making a stunning visual experience.

A Walk in the Souq, July 2006

Like most places where you don't speak the language I often found what was going on around me baffling. Bizarre things seemed to happen all around us. Most often we were just observers, looking in from the outside and helpless to being washed around by the flow of people around us.

Moroccan Tale, June 2006

The landscape and architecture we wandered was often harsh but romantic with a rich sense of history and folklore.

Chefchaouen Nights, July 2006

I remember making a shadow play with cut out fish on a warm moonlit rooftop in Chefchaouen with my friend Myrto - totally bemusing the hotel owners. It seemed to really describe our sense of being out of our usual environment but also a huge sense of freedom.

Something a little more traditional...

Morningside walled garden May 2006
This was the view from the back of my first studio in Edinburgh. The surface is quite deeply textures with collaged paper.

November 2006

These images incorporate collaging and use of charcoal line to create strong graphic images - strongly influenced by street/ graffiti art.

Collaging - the beginning

A New Beginning, June 2006

Ripping up and selecting pieces of paper, often from old paintings and drawings, has a long history for me. I enjoy using different papers and prints, newspaper and found images to create texture and depth.

Into the shoe...

... lets just hope you don't find this blog either an open toed sandal or too much of a fluffy slipper but somewhere between a bouncy colourful trainer and a sturdy yet stylish boot. Podiatrist I am not nor a fashionista, but this is how my feet touch the ground.
